Do You Still Pay Medicare Taxes While on Medicare?

fica hey marc! medicare social security benefits Aug 03, 2023

This was a question I had never had before and was hoping you know the answer. I had a client ask me if they will still have Medicare taxes deducted from their paycheck once they are on Medicare.

Yes, your client will still have Medicare taxes deducted from their paycheck even after enrolling in Medicare. Here’s why:

  1. Medicare Taxes Continue:

    • Regardless of Medicare Status: Medicare taxes are still deducted from your client’s paycheck as long as they have earned income. This rule applies regardless of age or Medicare enrollment status.
  2. FICA Taxes on Earnings:

    • No Exemption: Just like with Social Security Benefits (SSB), if your client is still working and earning income, they are required to pay Medicare taxes. There’s no exemption from these taxes based on Medicare enrollment.

In summary, even after enrolling in Medicare, your client will continue to have Medicare taxes deducted from their paycheck if they are still earning income. This is a standard rule that applies to all individuals with earnings.
