How to Correct Bank Information After Applying for Social Security

We have a client who recently applied for Social Security online and after it was complete, realized he entered an old bank routing number and account. Do you know the quickest and most efficient way for him to get that changed? He isn’t starting payments until April, so he should have plenty of time!

If your client has recently applied for Social Security online and realized that they entered an old bank routing number and account, the process for updating that information depends on the current status of their claim.

  1. If the Claim is Processed and Awaiting Payment:

    • The client can easily change the bank information through their online Social Security account. By logging in, they can update the routing and account numbers to ensure the payments go to the correct bank.
  2. If the Claim is Still in Process:

    • If the claim has not yet been fully processed, the client will need to take a different approach. They can either call the Social Security Administration at the 800 number provided on their application documents or visit their local SSA office. In either case, they will need to provide the correct bank information to ensure the payment details are updated in time for their first payment in April.

Since the client’s payments won’t start until April, there should be ample time to correct the bank details. Prompt action will help ensure that everything is set up correctly for when the payments begin.
