Issues Downloading XML Files from SSA.gov: What to Do?
Aug 21, 2024I have a client who is unable to download his XML files from SSA.gov. He currently has filed for, and was approved for, disability benefits due to start in February (although he did just get a call saying his claim was rejected – that might be a whole other issue!). Anyhow, I know the SSA system itself isn’t having an issue because I was able to download my own file. Does the system block someone who is currently collecting any benefit from downloading their XML files? That doesn’t seem right to me. Afterall, it’s now the only document where you can go back and see year-by-year earnings since the start of a taxpayer’s work history.
If your client is unable to download their XML files from SSA.gov despite being approved for disability benefits, it’s likely not due to the fact that they are receiving benefits. The Social Security Administration (SSA) allows beneficiaries to access their full earnings history through the XML download, regardless of whether they are currently receiving benefits.
There could be a few reasons for the issue your client is experiencing. It might be related to a technical problem on their end, such as browser compatibility issues, or it could be an isolated issue with their account. Given that you've successfully downloaded your own XML files from the SSA website, it suggests the system is functioning properly, which means the problem is likely specific to your client's account or device.
To resolve this, your client should try accessing the SSA website using a different browser or device to see if the issue persists. Clearing the browser’s cache or disabling any browser extensions might also help. If these steps don’t work, the next best course of action would be to contact the SSA directly through their 800 number for technical assistance. The SSA representative can help troubleshoot the issue or provide an alternative way to access the XML files.
