Military Service Wage Credits and Medicare Requirements for Postal Workers

hey marc! medicare military part b Jan 20, 2023

I read an article that says that someone with a military background, mostly National Guard or Reserve forces, are eligible for additional SS wage credits added to their earnings record.

This was new to me but what I found was it looks like there was legislation passed in 2022 regarding Postal workers and Medicare once the Postal worker retires. Here’s what you need to know about two separate but important topics: additional Social Security wage credits for those with military backgrounds and new Medicare requirements for retired Postal workers.

  1. Military Service and Social Security Wage Credits:

    • Eligibility for Additional Credits: Individuals with military service, particularly those in the National Guard or Reserve forces, may be eligible for additional Social Security wage credits. These credits are added to their earnings record, which can enhance their Social Security benefits.
    • Specific Periods of Service: For those who served between 1957 and 1967, an additional $300 in earnings per quarter of active duty is credited. Service after 1967 has these credits automatically applied, so no further action is required.
  2. New Medicare Requirements for Postal Workers (2022 Legislation):

    • Medicare Part B Mandate: Recent legislation passed in 2022 now requires new retirees from the U.S. Postal Service to enroll in Medicare Part B when they turn 65. This requirement is part of a broader effort to integrate Postal workers into the Medicare system and ensure that retirees have adequate healthcare coverage.
    • Impact on New Retirees: This new rule applies to those who retire after the legislation was passed, and it mandates that they take Medicare Part B upon reaching age 65, alongside their Postal Service retirement benefits.

In summary, there are additional Social Security wage credits available for those with military service, particularly from the National Guard and Reserve forces, which can positively impact their benefits. Additionally, new legislation now requires retired Postal workers to enroll in Medicare Part B at age 65. Both of these updates can have significant implications for those affected.
