Receiving Social Security Benefits While Living in Colombia

hey marc! living abroad Jun 06, 2022

We have a client that is filing for his SS. He is also moving to Columbia, South America. He is a U.S. citizen. What, if any will be the repercussions?

As a U.S. citizen, your client will continue to receive Social Security benefits after moving to Colombia, South America, without any issues. The Social Security Administration allows U.S. citizens to receive their benefits in most countries, including Colombia, with no interruption.

Here’s what your client should know:

  1. Continued Payments:

    • No Repercussions: Moving to Colombia will not affect the receipt of Social Security benefits. Your client will continue to receive payments just as they would if they were living in the U.S.
  2. Payment Methods:

    • Direct Deposit: It’s recommended to have the benefits directly deposited into a U.S. bank account, which can then be accessed from Colombia. Alternatively, some U.S. citizens arrange for their benefits to be deposited into an international bank account.
  3. Reporting Requirements:

    • Keep SSA Informed: Your client should notify the SSA of their new address in Colombia to ensure that they continue to receive important mail and updates. It’s also important to keep the SSA informed of any changes in circumstances that might affect their benefits.
  4. Tax Considerations:

    • U.S. Taxes: Social Security benefits may still be subject to U.S. taxes, depending on your client’s overall income. It’s advisable to consult with a tax professional who understands both U.S. and Colombian tax laws to ensure compliance.

In summary, your client can rest assured that moving to Colombia will not disrupt their Social Security benefits. They can continue to receive their payments as usual, with minimal adjustments needed for living abroad.
